Danladi Nasidi, who works with the Nigeria U15 side, says two sides are keen on the youngster, but has backed him to remain at the Etihad Stadium
Two teams are hoping to sign Kelechi Iheanacho from Manchester City, according to one of his former coaches.
Danladi Nasidi worked with the 20-year-old during his younger years, helping to put him on a path which has lead to Premier League and Champions League stages.
Iheanacho has flourished in recent years, with the 2015-16 campaign representing his breakthrough season at City.
He netted 14 times in all competitions after bursting onto the scene under Manuel Pellegrini, and has added another four to that tally this term as part of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Regular game time at a European heavyweight should help to keep him out of the clutches of a rival club, but Nasidi, who forms part of the Nigeria U15 set-up, claims he is aware of admiring glances being shot in Iheanacho’s direction.
He told allnigeriasoccer.com: “I have been told two teams are interested in signing Kelechi now.
“He is doing fine in Man City, I want him to stay and grow with City before moving to another club.”
Nasidi has also been discussing the role which best suits his former scholar.
Iheanacho is capable of operating as a central striker, but he faces stiff competition for a starting spot at City from Argentine marksman Sergio Aguero.
Taking that into account, Nasidi believes Guardiola would be advised to use the youngster in a support role.
He says a man with seven senior international caps to his name is more suited to playing off a leading partner, or cutting inside from a wider berth.
Nasidi added: “Kelechi is not a number nine, he doesn’t like defenders to mark him. He is a supporting striker, sometimes I played him as a winger, from the left.
“I also played him in the midfield, he takes shots because he is free in midfield. If you put him as a top striker, he won’t be able to shoot.”
Iheanacho has netted in Premier League meetings with Manchester United, Bournemouth and Southampton this season, helping City to seven points.
He has also found the target once in Champions League competition, in a 4-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach.
